What the bird process does
iCloud Drive has to notice local changes, coordinate downloads and uploads, and reconcile versions across devices. bird is one of the background processes involved in that work. It is expected to exist even when no iCloud window is open.
Apple does not publish a detailed operator manual for this daemon. That is a reason to be precise, not imaginative: high CPU shows activity, but it does not reveal which file is involved or prove that the service is broken.
When bird activity is expected
You recently signed in, enabled Desktop and Documents syncing, moved a large folder, restored the Mac, or changed many iCloud files on another device.
Those events create a backlog. CPU use may rise while the Mac examines local files and handles sync work. Finder status icons should change, and the load should eventually move or settle once the backlog clears.
When iCloud may be stuck
Files remain on “waiting” or show the same error, bird stays busy without visible progress, or the Mac repeatedly retries the same path.
Common constraints include insufficient local space, one problematic file or name, a very large change set, account or network trouble, and a repeated CloudDocs error. Activity Monitor cannot tell these apart.
Fixstart with Finder's iCloud status and available disk space. Avoid creating more large file changes while investigating. If one file is named in an error, copy it somewhere safe before renaming or moving it.
What Noah can determine on this Mac
NoahNoah can measure bird's CPU and memory, check available disk space, inspect iCloud Drive locations without reading document contents, and read recent bird and CloudDocs logs. Repeated errors can reveal whether the process is retrying one path instead of making ordinary progress.
Noah cannot see Apple's server-side queue or promise which file will sync next. When the local evidence only shows active work, the honest answer may be to wait rather than reset anything.
Manual checks that do not risk your iCloud data
- Open iCloud Drive in Finder and switch to List view. Enable the iCloud Status column if it is available.
- Check System Settings > General > Storage. Leave working room before attempting a large download.
- Confirm ordinary websites load. A general connection problem can stall cloud work without being an iCloud defect.
- Restart the Mac only after noting which files are stuck. Do not delete
CloudDocsdata or sign out as a first step.
